Civic Groups Protest National Action Plan on Human Rights

“We oppose fake human rights policy that promotes homosexuality and gay marriage.” “Scrap policy that discriminates against religion and shushes people.”

Members of civic organizations including the Citizens Association Against Constitutional Revision Allowing Gay Marriage (CAGM) held a press conference on June 21 in front of the Ministry of Justice offices in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi-do, declaring their opposition to the “National Action Plan on Human Rights (NAP).” They said the NAP “contains a ‘poison pill’ that is creating social chaos,” and they demanded its revision or abolition (top photo). CAGM is an umbrella organization of 298 groups.

Gil Won-pyeong (photo below), chairperson of the CAGM steering committee, said, “We made the urgent decision to hold this press conference after hearing a report that the NAP, announced last month by the Justice Ministry, is to be approved by the National Assembly next month, then promulgated by Presidential order and put into effect.” He warned, “The remedy is either complete revision or abolition. If it is implemented rashly, there will be increased human rights infringements in the name of human rights.” Following the press conference, representatives of the participating groups submitted a position statement to the Ministry of Justice pointing out problems in the plan.

Last month, the policy department of the Ministry of Justice issued a press release explaining that “Up to now, the planned Act on Prohibition of Discrimination contains no contents that would limit religious freedom, and the claim that it promotes homosexuality is irrelevant, since no decision has been made on whether or not to include a reference to sexual orientation.”
