Princeton Seminary to Expand Exchanges with Korean Theological Graduate Schools

2014-01-22 16:06

On January 21, the Princeton Theological Seminary (President: Dr. M. Craig Barnes), located in New Jersey, U.S.A., announced that it will expand exchanges and cooperation with the Korean church, including its key theological graduate schools.

“One of the priority projects of President Craig Barnes, who was installed at the end of last year, is to strengthen networks with our graduates abroad,” the Reverend Jake Kim, Princeton Theological Seminary’s director of alumni/ae relations, said in a news release. “In particular, it is planned to promote cooperative relations with Korean theological graduate schools, which have produced more of Princeton’s overseas graduates than any other country.”

For this, Princeton Seminary is working with theological graduate schools in Korea toward the introduction of student exchange programs, internship programs for practical training of Princeton Seminary students in Korean churches, and other projects. The Seminary explained that detailed plans will be worked out following President Barnes’s visit to Korea in May, when he will be in touch with Yonsei United Graduate School of Theology, Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Torch Trinity Graduate University and others.

“We are working on a program for mutual recognition of academic credits by Princeton and Korean theological graduate schools,” Director Kim said. “The mutual exchange program will be an opportunity for young pastors and mission workers of both countries to broaden their experiences.”

Princeton Theological Seminary was established in 1812 by the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A., through the secession of the theological department from Princeton University, of Ivy League fame. Korea has 80 some graduates from Princeton Seminary, including the late Rev. Han Kyung-jik, Rev. Manu Song Chang-geun (who cultivated the theoretical base of early Korean Christianity), Rev. Janggong Kim Jae-jun (founder of Chosen Theological Seminary, predecessor of Hanshin University), Chang Sang (Co-moderator of the World Council of Churches), and others.
