On September 3, the international rescue and development NGO “Better World” (President: Rev. Lee Jae-hun) announced that violinist Chung Kyung-wha had volunteered for service in Nkomangwa, Rwanda, from August 24th to 29th along with Better World’s medical service team.

Nkomangwa, approximately one hour by car from the capital city Kigali, is a village in a remote mountainous area without electricity, tap water or medical facilities. Since last year, Better World, together with a Rwandan military hospital, has been providing mobile medical services and parasitological examinations, distributing mosquito nets, and also preparing to build the Munyiginya branch medical service.

Violinist Chung (center, in photo), service ambassador of Better World, visited homes in Nkomangwa and helped install mosquito nets on August 24. Many houses had mosquito nets that were more than 10 years old, or had received new mosquito nets but just put them aside, not knowing how to install them. After visiting the residents, Chung said, “Now that I see how they live, I know what I should help them with… I promise to provide them with water supply equipment and 500 chickens.”

From August 25 to 27, the medical service team attended the building completion ceremony for the Munyiginya branch medical service, provided mobile medical services with the military hospital, and gave lectures about how to avoid catching the Ebola virus. There also was a ground-breaking ceremony for a poultry farm to improve the nutrition of local residents and increase their income. Two young adult villagers are to be trained by “Jesus’ Village” in Boeun, Chungcheongbukdo, and “Onnuri Farm” in Anseong, Gyeonggido, as future managers of the estimated 600-head poultry farm, starting when the construction is completed.

Kim Gwang-dong (far left in photo), representative of Better World, said, “We relate to Rwanda because we share the same pain of fratricide. We’ll continue helping the residents by building the medical service branch, the chicken farm, and a school.”
