Sungkonghoe University and the Anglican Church of Korea (AC Korea) held a special Vocations Sunday Eucharist (photo) on October 19 in commemoration of the university’s 100th anniversary, at the campus on Yeondong-no in Guro-gu, Seoul. Approximately 3,000 AC Korea members filled the schoolyard and prayed with one heart for the future of the university.

The eucharist was co-hosted by Kim Geun-sang, Primate of AC Korea, and Park Dong-shin, Bishop of Busan. In “today’s main prayer,” Bishop Park entreated, “To bring the Lord’s nation on this earth, God called workers and had them spread the Gospel… We pray that Sungkonghoe University will be abundantly worthy as a hall of truth, and will support the strong faith and wisdom of priest candidates.”

The participants then read together the “prayer for the university’s centennial vocations”: “We give thanks to God for opening Sungkonghoe Theological Seminary 100 years ago when our people were in deep darkness and despair… Let us bear in our hearts the fact that this school is a mission tool for the establishment of God’s Kingdom on this earth, and let us pray harder and love more with all our hearts… Bless this school that it may be a foundation of noble learning about God, through which good shepherds are raised to wipe the tears of our poor and marginalized neighbors, just like Jesus, who searched for even one lost sheep.”

In his sermon, Bishop Kim said, “Jesus told his disciples, ‘I’m sending you, as my Father has sent me.’ Vocations to spread the news of God’s Kingdom are not limited to the disciples but are extended to us today.”

The event was held to commemorate the centennial of Sungkonghoe University, which opened in 1914 as Saint Michael’s Theological Seminary. President Lee Jeong-gu of Sungkonghoe University said, “This is a very meaningful gathering of our Anglican Church members from all over the country, here at Sungkonghoe University campus, to worship together with one heart for the development of the university… I ask you to continue as one for another 100 years, to develop our vocations and the university.”
