“Mass media alcohol ads and drinking scenes should be banned”

Voices are calling for Korean churches to take the lead in changing and healing the pervasive drinking culture in Korean society. On November 17, the Korea Christian Leaders Council held a “special prayer meeting for eradication of alcoholism” at the National Assembly Memorial Hall in Yeoeui-do, Seoul, and adopted a resolution for prevention and eradication of alcoholism. The resolution declared, “Concern by all citizens, countermeasures by the government, and prayers by the churches are urgently needed in response to the serious situation in which 3.5 million alcoholics have brought harm to 15 million direct and indirect victims.” It urged, “The government should take measures to improve the living environment of alcoholics, and to prohibit alcohol advertising and displays of drinking scenes in the mass media.” The resolution further stated, “We need legislation for the isolation of alcoholics in special facilities where they can receive treatment, and the creation of an alcohol consumption tax to be used for prevention and treatment of alcoholics.”
