The “Lenten Season Prayer Meeting Pilgrimage for Peaceful Reunification, Marking the 70th Anniversary of Liberation and Division,” organized by the Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea (PROK), opened at 2 p.m. on February 23, in Seogwipo, Jeju-do. Sponsored by the PROK Committee on Peaceful Reunification, and supported by 25 presbyteries, the prayer meeting will be held every Monday until March 30, at different locations throughout the country.

The first prayer meeting took place at Gangjeong Saengmyeong Pyeonghwa (Life and Peace) Church, on Seonban-no in Seogwipo city. Its theme was “Prayers for Jeju-do as an island of peace, and for reconciliation and peace in Gangjeong Village.” All voices were raised in prayer, sharing the hope for peaceful solution of the recent conflict between area residents and the government over the issue of construction of a naval base in Gangjeong.

Rev. Cho Yeong-bae (photo) of Gangjeong Saengmyeong Pyeonghwa Church prayed, "Today we've gathered here to pray for peace and reunification of the Korean Peninsula. Let us now have a time of resolve to remember and follow our Lord Jesus Christ, who suffered and achieved peace on the Cross.”

The PROK has appealed to church members who cannot attend the prayer meetings, to take part in a “one day prayer fast” or a “local prayer meeting.”
