Four major religious bodies have agreed to cooperate in a “small weddings campaign” to help bring down exorbitant wedding costs.

Korean Protestants, Catholics, Buddhists and Won Buddhists, together with the Gender Equality Ministry, held a “Small Weddings, Happy Families Cooperative Agreement Signing Ceremony” on April 21 at Sejong Hall in Sejong Cultural Center, in Gwanghwamun, Seoul. The agreement declared, “We will work to expand the social base toward reform of the high-cost wedding culture, and to form a social environment that is conducive to family harmony.”

In addition to a relay signature campaign and publications, the four religious bodies agreed to cooperate positively by opening their churches and temples for use as wedding venues.

According to research by Duowed, a wedding consulting firm, the current (as of March) average cost per person of a wedding in Korea is 51,370,000 won, which is almost 20,000,000 won more than the U.S. average (32,830,000 won).
