NCCK Conducts Asia Sunday Worship Service

The National Council of Churches in Korea (NCCK) convened its 2015 Asia Sunday worship service on May 17 at Kangnam Community Church (Rev. Jeon Byeong-geum) on Ggachisan-no, Gangseo-gu, Seoul, with the theme “God’s World, Living Together.”

In 1974, the Christian Conference of Asian (CCA), of which NCCK is a member, designated the Sunday just before Pentecost (50th day after Easter) as Asia Sunday. On this day each year, CCA calls upon its members to pray for Asian and world peace, and for church unity.

During this year’s Asia Sunday service, NCCK Moderator Hwang Yong-dae (speaker in photo) said in his sermon “Asian Troubles,” “The only way to overcome the hopeless situations in Asia brought about by threats of war, natural disasters such as the earthquakes in Nepal, and pervasive poverty and hunger, is to directly experience the truth of the Gospel by living together as God’s creatures.”

The participants prayed and took up an offering in support of restoration in earthquake-stricken Nepal. Raja Ram Bartaula, Nepal’s Counsellor and Deputy Chief of Mission in Korea, who attended the service, requested the churches’ continuous prayers.

CCA, composed of 100 denominations and 17 national councils of churches in 21 countries, is the largest organization working for church unity and cooperation in Asia. This coming May 20~27, it will hold its 14th General Assembly in Jakarta, Indonesia.
