At the ceremony, Rev. Lee Sang-uk announced KNU’s plan to establish a “Global Christian Center” (temporary title), a dormitory for 60 KNU Christian students and 40 foreign students who are interested in Christianity. The purpose of the planned center is to introduce foreign students to sincere Christian faith, so that they may become a human network for overseas mission when they return to their respective countries. Additionally, KNU is considering plans to build facilities with a similar purpose in foreign countries for overseas mission.
Rev. Lee said, “Last year we formed the ‘International Jeongeum Service Team’ to prepare for the Global Christian Center, and carried out various activities including a barbecue party for foreign students and free medical exams… As we received help from other countries for the establishment of the KNUCC, now it is time for us to help evangelize campuses in other countries.”
During the service, Rev. Son In-ung (pastor emeritus, Seoul Deoksu Church), a KNUCC alumnus, delivered a sermon titled “Living Life Together.” The Center dedicated plaques of gratitude to local churches in the Daegu region for their ongoing support.
KNUCC was established by KNU students who attended the 4th International Work Camp, held at KNU, with support from the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. (UPCUSA, at that time called “Northern Presbyterian Church”) and local churches. Currently 63 students live at the Center as a Christian community. In 2000, the Center built a new building (photo above), which now also houses the University Church, established by the Center in 2005. KNUCC alumni include Kim Young-ho (former Minister of Commerce, Industry and Energy), Dr. Kim Sun-gwon (known as the “Corn Doctor”), and Kim Seong-su (former president of Kosin University.)
