“Homosexuality is a sin, and such obscene activities should stop immediately”

2015-06-29 16:01

“We love you all! We are against homosexuality!" "Homosexuality makes one prone to AIDS. We are against homosexuality! It destroys God's creation!"

On June 28, a large group of Christians and other members of the general public shouted and picketed in front of Daehanmun, the main gate to Deoksugung Palace, in Jung-gu, Seoul (photo). The scorching sun made them sweat but did not stop their shouting. They cried aloud in prayer for a long time, asking God to protect their children and keep them away from homosexuality.

The group had gathered on this day for the “Korean church denominations’ united service and rally urging a stop to homosexuality promotion,” organized by the Korean Church Countermeasures Committee Against Homosexuality (executive director: Rev. So Gang-seok). Across the street at Seoul Plaza, the 2015 Queer Festival and Parade was taking place.

Kim Dong-gwon, former moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Korea (PCK Hapdong), and Rev. Choi Nak-jun of Haeoreum Church.]

In his welcoming address, Rev. Lee Young-hoon (CCK executive director) said, “Homosexuality is the main cause of the spread of AIDS; therefore, according to faith and ethical standards, it is not right, but clearly sinful… Such an obscene, anti-biblical cultural event as the Queer Festival should stop immediately. At the same time, we Christians pity those who have fallen into homosexuality, are praying for them to repent, and will embrace them in the love of Christ when they return.”

Rev. Yang Byeong-hui read the Committee’s message to the citizens: “The entire country worries about MERS, and now homosexuals are carrying on their obscene parade, naked and dancing. We do not intend to oppress anyone’s human rights. We are trying to help everyone live together. If we allow and abet homosexuals in doing as they please, this country will fall into hell and be destroyed… The motive behind the pro-homosexuals’ opening of the Queer Festival and trying to get public attention is to pass the anti-discrimination bill, which advocates and promotes homosexuality.”

The police estimated that some 10,000 persons participated in the various gatherings against homosexuality, which continued until late at night.
