2015-08-26 16:09
Major ecumenical organizations and denominations of the Korean church gave thanks to God as they welcomed the agreement concluded by South Korea and North Korea on August 25, after a marathon four days of negotiations by high-ranking government leaders. The Christian Council of Korea (CCK, executive director: Rev. Lee Young-hoon), the Communion of Churches in Korea (CCIK, executive director: Rev. Yang Byeong-hui), the National Council of Churches in Korea (NCCK, general secretary: Rev. Kim Young-ju), the Council of Presbyterian Churches in Korean (CPCK, executive director: Rev. Hwang Su-won), the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Korea Hapdong (PCK Hapdong, moderator: Rev. Baek Nam-seon), the Presbyterian Church of Korea Baekseok (PCK Baekseok, moderator: Rev. Jang Jong-hyeon), the Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea (PROK, moderator: Rev. Hwang Yong-dae), the Korea Evangelical Holiness Church (KEHC, moderator: Rev. Yu Dong-seon), the Jesus Korea Holiness Church (JKHC, moderator: Rev. Song Deok-jun), and other Christian organizations, all expressed hope that this agreement can ease the strained South-North relationship and lead to peaceful reunification. For this, they added, the Korean church needs to continue praying, and pray more earnestly.

Some organizations, however, also declared that they are not fully satisfied with some specifics of the agreement. CCIK pointed out, “North Korea carried out landmine and shelling provocations, but they did not apologize sincerely. It is questionable whether it was appropriate to stop the loudspeaker broadcasts when they only expressed regrets.”
