2016-05-16 16:35

On May 14 at Yanbian University of Science and Technology in Yanji city, Jilin province, China, a competition for Joseonjok (Koreans in China) took place: the “YUST Cup Youth and Children Composition Writing Contest” (photo). No fewer than 843 students took part in the contest. They had been selected and sent as “representatives” from 30 some Joseonjok elementary schools in Yanbian province. Several hundred parents waited outside the contest venue, praying that their children would write well.

This year marked the 18th time for the contest, which was started in 1999. It was sponsored by Joseonjok children’s magazine “Sonyeon Adong (Youth and Children)” and supported by Yanbian University of Science and Technology and EM Korea Ltd. “YUST” in the contest’s title is the university’s abbreviated English name. The sponsoring body selects approximately 15 prize winners, who are offered the chance to visit Korea. This year’s winners will come for an eight-day visit at the end of July.
