Killing of Korean Missionary in Philippines Raises Warning to Overseas Mission Sites

Korean missionary to the Philippines Shim Jae-seok (57) has been killed. His death is all the more unfortunate as it comes amidst rising worries about safety following the murder of a missionary working with North Koreans in China.

According to the Korean Embassy in the Philippines and the Methodist Missionaries Association in the Philippines, at daybreak on the morning of May 20, missionary Shim encountered the criminal, who had been hiding in his house. In their confrontation, the criminal wielded an empty 10kg gas cylinder against Shim and fled. At around 6:30 a.m., Shim was moved to a hospital, but he had already stopped breathing, the Missionaries Association said.

In the year 2000, Missionary Shim was dispatched to the Philippines by Global Mission Methodist Church, which belongs to the Incheon Eastern District of the Central Conference of the Korean Methodist Church. He worked in the Taitai area of northeastern Metro Manila. There he established “House of Prayer” as a local church, provided relief assistance to poor local residents, and carried out education and mission activities.

On May 22 during Sunday worship at Heaven of Angels Funeral Home in Antipolo City, Philippines, Shim Jae-seok’s wife, missionary Ahn Jeong-yun (photo), reflected together with other bereaved family members and acquaintances about her husband’s ministry. “He never lost his smile as he quietly acted in love for the local people,” she said. “He always prayed fervently for Philippine souls.”
