A memorial worship service for the late Rev. Park Hyung-kyu was held in the first-floor event room of the funeral hall at Seoul National University Hospital in Jongno-gu, Seoul.

The National Council of Churches in Korea held the service (photo, courtesy of Newsis) on the afternoon of August 21 to remember and celebrate Rev. Park’s life. Park served as chair of the NCCK Human Rights commission for two years, from 1983.

Suh Kwang-sun, professor emeritus of Ewha Womans University, who worked in ministry together with Rev. Park for several decades, preached a sermon titled “Dirt Spoon, Unglazed Ceramic Pot, Malddugi (mask dance character symbolizing grassroots people) Minister.” He said, “In his autobiography, Rev. Park called himself ‘as homely as an unglazed ceramic pot,’ but that unglazed pot was filled with the treasure called Jesus’ truth…And the road he walked was the way of the Cross.”

NCCK General Secretary Kim Young-ju said, “It’s too bad that Rev. Park, who gave himself body and soul to the democratic movement, died before he could see the formation of a welfare society…His younger colleagues should reflect on his life and take up his spiritual legacy.”

Rev. Park’s funeral service will take place at 9:00 a.m. on August 22, in Zoe Hall of the Korea Christian Building, located on Daehang-no in Jongno-gu, Seoul.
