The “3rd Korean Christian Social Welfare Expo,” highlighting the public service work of the Korean churches, concluded its official five-day, four-night schedule on October 20 with a final press conference (photo) at Jeongdong Theater in Jung-gu, Seoul. This expo, stepping outside the boundary of church into citizens’ cultural space, raised public awareness about the diverse service activities being carried out by the Korean churches, and explored directions for future service ministries.

Previous Christian Social Welfare Expos were held at Youngnak Church (1st expo) and at Yoido Full Gospel Church (2nd). This time was different, with the expo unfolding at Seoul Plaza, the Seoul Metropolitan Council, and Seoul City Hall, and members of the public joining in events.

The nine themes of the exhibits and seminars held at this year’s Christian Social Welfare Expo included the eradication of poverty and the protection of health and well being. The nine themes were selected for their fit with the Korean situation, from among the 17 “Sustainable Development Goals” announced by the United Nations in 2015, and were considered also in terms of directions and methods of international service.

The sponsors plan to publish the conference and seminar presentations as a collection to be distributed to libraries around the country. The next expo is scheduled for 2020.
