Ahead of the 100th anniversary of Korea’s independence movement of 1919, Protestant Christian organizations have formed the Korea Christian March 1 Movement Centennial Committee.
On November 13, the National Council of Churches in Korea (NCCK), the National Council of YMCAs of Korea, and the Korea YWCA held a press conference in the auditorium of Seoul YWCA in Myeongdong, Jung-gu, Seoul, to inaugurate the committee, and announced that Christian organizations will jointly prepare for the March 1 Movement centennial. They also said they will cooperate with the preparatory committees already set up by the general assemblies of the Korean Methodist Church and the Presbyterian Church of Korea Tonghap, in order to expand the preparations.
The consensus expressed at the press conference was that the March 1, 1919 Movement was the starting point of Korea’s Christian social movement. The Centennial Committee is planning to implement various programs, including a March 1st Movement Centennial Korean Christian Peace Declaration and Symposium, the operation of a young people’s history school, a centennial memorial worship service, a conference of South-North religious leaders, and a renewed drive to have March 1st documents registered as UNESCO world heritages.
