NCCK’s First Woman Moderator Rev. Yu Yeong-hui: “I’ll work for church unity”

The National Council of Churches in Korea (NCCK), founded in 1924, has just birthed its very first woman moderator. On November 20, NCCK opened its 66th regular General Assembly at the Seodaemun General Assembly Building of Assemblies of God Korea (AGK) in Mapo-gu, Seoul, and appointed as its new moderator the Rev. Yu Yeong-hui (left in photo, Seoul Myeongil Full Gospel Church), moderator of AGK Seodaemun 1st District Council. The NCCK moderator post is held by a person from one of NCCK’s nine member denominations, who rotate this responsibility in turn.

As former NCCK vice moderator, Rev. Yu has been a member of the executive committee, chaired the women’s committee and the gender equality committee, and served in other roles. Speaking at a press conference on the 20th, she said, “The Korean churches will find their path to life by redirecting themselves to the places of the poor and the humble…While inheriting the spirit of the Reformation and planning transformations in the church, I will promote the development of an NCCK that presents the hope of salvation.” She added, “As NCCK’s first woman moderator, I have a big responsibility, but I will work for projects that bring the denominations into harmony.”

The Assembly also passed a motion to ratify the appointment of Rev. Lee Hong-jeong (right), who was elected by the executive committee on November 19 as NCCK general secretary. The term of a general secretary is four years, with a possible additional term. Last year’s 65th General Assembly extended the retirement age of the general secretary by five years, to age 70.

Included in this day’s actions was the decision to carry out “Advent Candlelight Prayer Meetings Together With the World Church.” The prayer meetings will take place during December 3~9 at Gwanghwamun Plaza in Seoul, starting at 6:30 p.m. each day. They will be supervised in turn by the NCCK reconciliation and unification committee and NCCK’s member denominations.
