Key to Chick-fil-A’s Christian Operation: Closed on Sundays, More Sales on Mondays

Chick-fil-A, established in 1946 and currently operating 2,200 stores in 47 U.S. states, is well known as a Christian company, with an unbroken tradition of closing each Sunday.

Chick-fil-A’s president Dan Cathy (65, photo) recently visited Korea to investigate the possibility of the company’s entry into the Korean market. Meeting with Kukmin Daily on April 11 at Kensington Hotel in Yeoeui-do, he started off the interview by pulling a small Bible out of his inside pocket.

“This old Bible is like a mirror of faith for me. I always carry it around with me. My father Truett Cathy, our founder, also emphasized the importance of operating the company in accord with the Bible. In fact, the Bible contains more wisdom than any economics textbook. It is an essential book for business managers.”

The ultimate emphasis of this president of a company with recorded sales last year of 9 billion dollars (9.6 trillion won) is “Biblical life.” “Much more is gained by closing the door on Sundays and going out to places of worship. What is more, Monday sales are sharply increasing. Our executives and workers think of this offering of their Sundays as a weekly tithe.”
