Memorial Day Patriotic Prayer Meetings: “Bring about unification through the Gospel”

2018-06-07 16:52

“Prayer warriors” gathered in large numbers this Memorial Day to honor the sacrificial devotion of patriotic martyrs who have given their lives for Korea. Not only did people clasp their hands in prayers of entreaty for a peaceful and reunified Korean peninsula, as they have done every Memorial Day for years, but they also skipped meals during prayer, following the spirit of Nehemiah, who fasted as he prayed to God for the reconstruction of his fatherland. With just a few days left before the North Korea-United States summit meeting (June 12) and nationwide local elections (June 13), the atmosphere at patriotic prayer meetings this year was more ardent than ever.

On the afternoon of June 6, Yonsei Jungang Church in Guro-gu, Seoul, was overflowing with the sound of prayers by more than 20,000 people. The “prayer warriors” who had come from around the country to attend this “Nehemiah Prayer Fast For the Nation” filled not only the main sanctuary but its attached buildings as well. As of the 6th, the total number of participants in this prayer meeting, which opened on June 4 under the auspices of the National Prayer Movement, had reached 60,000. Former Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn (right), speaking at the event on June 6, declared, “Prayer is the only way to overcome the national crisis.”
