Counter-Queer Festival: “Come back from the sin of homosexuality”

On July 14, Christians and members of civil organizations from around the nation held a “Counter-Rally Against Homosexuals’ Queer Festival.” The participants pointed out damages and immorality stemming from sexual acts between persons of the same sex, and emphasized the importance of family and life through a mass parade and cultural contents.

Filling a five-lane main street, approximately 10,000 participants from Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, and other regions clearly communicated their opposition to homosexuality, same-sex marriage, gender equality, the anti-discrimination act, and the National Action Plan on Human Rights (NAP).

Esther Prayer Movement Representative Lee Yong-hui said, “Cheongwadae (the Blue House) has ignored a petition by 219,000 citizens. Are we to call this negligent government a government for the citizens?” and emphasized, “God will recognize the dedication and hard work of believers from all corners of this nation and will act on this matter. Let us show our truth and hope to the president, the Seoul mayor, and all citizens.”

Marching 3.2km to Gwanghwamun via Sungnyemun (South Gate), the participants shouted slogans such as “Children, come back!” and “Don’t be fooled by bad adults’ false human rights!” Ms. Park Byeol-ju, who was accompanied by her two children, said, “If we recognize what homosexuals call love, and the anti-discrimination act passes, our children will have less possibility of identifying what is true love in the future. So I came today to prevent that.”

This year the counter-rally event was divided into four parts, one of which had cultural contents focusing on the importance of family and life. The participants stood and danced during performances by CCM singers David and Kang Chan, and male popera group Bohemian.

Another change noticeable this year was that the pivotal role has moved from mega-churches to medium- and small-sized churches, and from an organizing committee to civil organizations. And a new task has emerged: To preempt teen participation in the Queer Festival, now showing a rapid increase.
