Carpenter Kim Myeong-won (55) first fell in love with the cross one day in 2006 when he saw his pastor, Rev. Jeong Chan-seong of Ganghwa Yeongeun Church, making a wooden cross in his office. He thought to himself, “I’m a carpenter. Why haven’t I thought of making crosses?” Back in his workshop, Deacon Kim began creating crosses, and for the past nine years straight, he has been turning out 20 to 30 crosses every day except Sunday, in various sizes ranging from 3 centimeters to more than 4 meters in length. He named his workshop “Philip” because he admires the sincere life of Deacon Philip in the Bible.
From September 20, Deacon Kim is holding a two-week exhibition of crosses at Anyang University in Gyeonggido. One may view his art works on his website as well: Philip Wooden Holy Equipment Workshop (phillp.net).
