Work has begun on the Korean translation of the complete works of German theologian Martin Luther (1483~1546), ahead of the 500th anniversary (in 2017) of his Religious Reformation. Though anthologies of excerpts from his core writings have been published here, a volume of his complete works is yet to come out.
On October 20, the Lutheran Church in Korea (Lutheran Church) announced that on the 26th it will hold a “Ceremony to Inaugurate Translation of the Complete Works of Luther,” at Luther University in Yongin, Gyeonggi-do. The event will introduce the goals of the publication and the members of the translation team. So far, about 30 Korean theologians have agreed to participate in the translation effort. These scholars belong to a variety of institutions including Yonsei, Sungkyunkwan, Luther, Hanshin, Presbyterian, Methodist and Mokwon universities.
The translation team will use as its text the complete collection of Luther’s works published by Concordia Press (photo). Judging that it will be difficult to translate Luther’s original writings, which are not in today’s German language but in 16th century German, they have chosen the method of retranslating an American translation. The Concordia collection contains Luther’s Biblical exegeses, sermons and other writings, in a total of 55 volumes. Lee Byeong-chang, Lutheran Church director of cooperative relations, said, “The translating has already started, and recently the index of the collection (vol. 55) has been completed.”
