At the start of Passion Week on March 30, more than 200 Christians wearing cross necklaces gathered in front of Mangbaedan (photo) at Imjingak Resort on Imjingak-no in Paju city, Gyeonggi-do. They were participating in the 6th event of the “Lenten Season Prayer Meeting Pilgrimage for Peaceful Reunification, sponsored by the Peace and Reunification Committee of the Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea (PROK) General Assembly. The title of the event was “Overcoming the 70-year History of Division: Prayer Meeting for Peaceful Reunification of the Korean Peninsula.”

“Holy Lord, too many souls have been inflicted with injury and suffering during the 70 years of division of the Korean peninsula. Forgive us for being swept into division and conflict, and for not making efforts to reconcile and reunify.”

The prayer of Seoul Presbytery Moderator Rev. Jeong Jin-wu rang out, breaking the stillness at Mangbaedan. In response to Rev. Jeong’s confession, the Christian gathering sang, “Kyrie Eleison, Lord, have mercy on us.” The participants then hummed a hymn as they walked around the Imjingak area offering pilgrimage prayers.

Rev. Han Seong-su, moderator of Seoul East Presbytery, led everyone in prayer: “We pray that the curtain of division will be destroyed by the precious blood of Jesus on the Cross…May the people of South and North embrace one another with hearts of forgiveness, compassion and love.”
