Korean Church Mourns Death of Former President, God’s Worker Kim Young-sam

Former President Kim Young-sam, a “Big Mountain” of Korean democratization, passed away on November 22 at the age of 88. He was in the opposition party for 35 years, and became the 14th President in 1993. Kim Young-sam and the late former President Kim Dae-jung were the two main figures in Korean politics from the time of their anti-dictatorship democratization movement in the 1970s.

Kim Young-sam will be remembered for his dedication to Korean politics as well as for his Christian faith. He was an elder at Choonghyun Presbyterian Church, which he attended until the early part of his term as President. Then, due to the inconvenience caused to his fellow church members by his security arrangements, he held worship services at the presidential residence during his term of office, and at home following his presidency.

Kim always kept Sunday holy, and during his official overseas trips he held worship services with local Korean missionaries.

During his hard life journey, Kim Young-sam depended upon God’s Word in the Bible and enjoyed singing hymns. It is known that he pursued a positive life, and particularly loved Isaiah 41:10: “Do not fear, for I am with you, do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.“

The late former President loved the hymns “All the way my Savior leads me” and “Father I stretch my hands to Thee.”

Former President Kim’s state funeral will take place on November 26 at the National Assembly building, and he will be buried in the Seoul National Cemetery.
