Clergy Tax Bill Passes National Assembly; Will Go Into Force in 2018

2015-12-04 11:19
At its main session on December 2, the National Assembly passed the income tax revision bill, which specifies a tax on clergy income, with 195 in favor, 20 opposed, and 50 abstaining, among the 267 National Assembly members who were present for the vote. Religious organizations are not included as objects of taxation. The law will become effective in January 2018.

The legislation of the clergy tax is taking place 47 years after this issue began to be discussed in 1968, and when it goes into effect in 2018, Korea will have a clergy tax for the first time in 50 years.
