[2015 Denominational General Assemblies Updates]

On September 14, in the 1st floor ballroom of La Vie D'or Resort in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do, PCK Baekseok (Rev. Jang Jong-hyeon, moderator) and PCK Daeshin (Rev. Jeon Gwang-hun, moderator, third from left in photo) opened their United General Assembly. The two denominations first started negotiations toward unity 17 years ago. The name of the newly united general assembly is “Presbyterian Church of Korea Daeshin (PCK Daeshin),” and its head is Rev. Jang Jong-hyeon (second from left). This merger of the two denominations with their 7,000 some churches marks the birth of the 3rd largest Korean church denomination. The clerks of the two uniting denominations announced that the number of delegates attending this assembly totaled 1,330.

At the 100th General Assembly of PCK Hapdong, held at Banyaweol Church (Rev. Lee Seung-heui) on Anshim-no in Dong-gu, Daegu, Rev. Park Mu-yong (66) of Daegu Hwanggeum Church was elected moderator, and Kim Seon-gyu (68) of Seonghyeon Church was elected vice-moderator.

PCK Tonghap opened its 100th General Assembly at Sangdang Church (Rev. Jeong Sam-su) in Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do. 1,460 representatives including ministers and elders from 65 presbyteries nationwide participated. Receiving 1,200 votes from the total 1,460 cast, Lee Seong-hui (right in photo above), pastor of Yundong Church in Seoul, was elected pastor vice-moderator. Incumbent pastor vice-moderator Rev. Chae Yeong-nam (Bonhyang Church in Gwangju, left in photo) was elected moderator. As it did at its 98th and 99th general assemblies, this time also PCK Tonghap is leading a “green general assembly.” As far as possible, the reading materials have been printed on recycled paper, and one-time-use items such as tea bags and instant coffee are not being provided.

The Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea (PROK) opened its 100th General Assembly at Youngkang Church (Rev. Seo Jae-il) in Wonju, Gangwon-do, with the theme “Do this in remembrance of me.” In commemorating this 100th anniversary, PROK oriented all its worship and other events during the assembly around the concept of “wilderness.” With the purpose of remembering its roots and its history of ecumenical and international cooperation, it also presented commendations to ancestors in the faith who have been models of faith, and to overseas denominations that have carried out active exchanges with PROK over the years.
