Council of Denomination Heads: “No passage of NAP without citizens’ consent”

2018-08-02 16:42

The Korean Church Council of Denomination Heads, holding an emergency press conference in front of the Blue House on August 1, announced its strong opposition to the “National Action Plan on Human Rights” (NAP), which contains a toxic article. The urgent appearance of the heads of 21 denominations including Presbyterian Church of Korea (PCK) Tonghap, Hapdong, Daeshin and Kosin was due to the high likelihood that the State Council, opening soon, will pass the NAP.

In their statement on this day, the denomination heads demanded replacement of the term “gender equality” with “male-female equality,” and an immediate end to the promotion of anti-discrimination legislation that infringes on religious freedom. They warned, “If the NAP is passed by the State Council on August 7, we clarify that this will bring a grave loss of confidence among the Korean churches and citizens and will arouse resistance.”

PCK Hapshin Moderator Park Sam-yeol (center) said, “There is absolutely no reason for Christian circles to oppose normal human rights protection policies… But we oppose the NAP because it includes homosexuals, who engage in immoral sexual acts, among the minorities to be protected.”

“In the event that NAP is left unchanged and is promulgated, the legal system maintained by Korean society will be shaken, and morality and ethics will collapse,” Moderator Park said. “For the government to take the lead in protecting homosexuality is tantamount to saying they will basically ignore God’s will.” He urged, “The administrators should humbly reconsider NAP, according to moral and ethical standards.”
