Joint South-North Peace Prayer Meeting To Be Held on 2014 Independence Day

The National Peace and Reunification Council (NPRC) met with Joseon Christian Federation (JCF) on June 24 at Haedanghwa Hall in Beijing, China, and announced on June 29 that the two organizations have agreed to hold a joint prayer meeting for peace and reunification (Joint Prayer Meeting) at Bongsu Church in Pyongyang from August 14 to 16. The two organizations held six joint prayer meetings in the past, but since 2005 worsening relations between South Korea and North Korea have prevented further meetings, despite their agreement to do so. Since JFC Chair Kang himself has agreed to hold the joint prayer meeting this time, it is anticipated that the meeting will actually be realized.

The size of the prayer meeting, however, is expected to be smaller than before. NPRC’s Rev. Jin said, “JCF asked us to reduce the number of Christian participants, in consideration of the political circumstances between South Korea and North Korea.” He added, “Last time, our group was 150 persons including the choir and the dance troupe. This time it will be only about 30 persons.”

Rev. Pi Jong-jin of NPRC also commented, “God, who made heaven and earth and is leading us toward reunification as well, will fill us with grace as we lament and pray for national peace and reunification… More prayers by the Korean church and believers are always needed as part of God’s precious action.”
