Chongshin Seminary Grad School Effectively Withdraws “No Women Students” Decision

2014-10-16 17:40

The steering board of Chongshin Theological Seminary has effectively retracted its decision to block the entrance of women students to the seminary’s graduate school. (See the linked article below for more information.)

On October 15, the steering board said, “Recently we have held an emergency officers’ meeting, at which it was decided to change our regulation stating, ‘Students entering the M.Div. course will be ordination candidates recommended by their presbytery,’ to read, ‘Students entering the M.Div. course will be recommended by their presbytery.” The board continued, “If the proposed change is passed by the board, women students can apply if they receive a recommendation from the head pastor of their church and the presbytery leader.” Because PCK Hapdong does not ordain women as ministers, all the ordination candidates recommended by the presbyteries are men. Accordingly, if entering students are limited to “presbytery-recommended ordination candidates,” only men can apply; but if the steering board changes the regulation, women students can apply as they did previously.

Steering Board Chair Kim Jong-jun explained, “We made this decision with the judgment that there is no need for Chongshin Theological Seminary to give a disadvantage to women students.” He added, “Any woman who dreams of going to seminary can study at Chongshin Theological Seminary, so please don’t hesitate to apply.”
