Korean Methodist Church Designates Nine New Heretical Groups

2014-11-04 09:40

On the last day of its 31st General Conference, the Korean Methodist Church (KMC) decided to designate nine organizations as heretical: World Mission Society Church of God (formerly known as Ahn Sahng Hong Witness Society), Shinchonji Church of Jesus the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony (Shinchonji), Salvation Sect (Evangelical Baptist Church), Christian Gospel Mission (known as JMS), Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (Unification Church), Jehovah's Witnesses, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon Church), the Church of Almighty God, and the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. It is the first time for KMC to designate a group of particular organizations as heretical.

With this decision, now there are 10 organizations that KMC officially considers as heretical. So far there was only one such group, Darakbang Evangelism Movement. At this General Conference, KMC also put four additional organizations on its watch list: Kim Gi-dong Berea Academy, Manmin Central Church, Great Faith Church, and Pyungkang Cheil Church.

The decision on whether or not to use the “21st Century Hymnal,” another of the important agenda items at this General Conference, was postponed. If KMC changes its hymnal, much confusion is expected, as well as a big burden of cost. KMC therefore decided to carry out further discussion before making its decision.

The inauguration service for new bishops of 10 annual conferences was also held on this day (photo).
