In his recent special contribution to Kukmin Daily, Rev. Jeong Byeong-eop of Gaeseong Church described the moment: “It had been drizzling all night and the devout members of Gaeseong Church were in the middle of early morning prayers at the church when suddenly they heard an ear-splitting boom at 5:17 a.m., October 16.” A bolt of lightning came down on the church roof, creating a huge pillar of light that was captured on video (photo) by the fire station inside Gaesong Industrial Complex. Gaesong Church (small photo in corner) is located inside the GIC.
In Exodus 13:21-22, God guided the Israelites “in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night.” In many other examples in the Old Testament, God’s existence is described as fire. Pastors, therefore, are trying to find God’s message in this rare weather phenomenon. Most of them agree that this may be God’s promise for peaceful coexistence of South and North Korea through Gaeseong Church, prosperity of the GIC, and revival of the church in both South Korea and North Korea.
