PROK and NCCK Hold Prayer and Worship Events in Busan for Nuclear-Free Korean Peninsula

In Busan, a Sunday worship service and a Friday prayer meeting brought together Christians who long for a non-nuclear Korean Peninsula.

On March 2, the Peace and Reunification Committee of the Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea (PROK) held a “Lenten Season Peace Pilgrimage Prayer Meeting” at Busan Jungbu Church, on Chaekbang Golmok-gil (Bookstore Alley) in Jung-gu, Busan, with the theme “For Realization of a Nuclear-Free Korean Peninsula.” Earlier, on February 27, the Life Ethics Committee of the National Council of Churches in Korea (NCCK) and “Christians in Solidarity for a Nuclear-Free World” organized a “3rd Anti-Nuclear Sunday United Worship” in front of the public relations building of the Gori Nuclear Power Plant Headquarters in Gijang-gun, Busan (photo).

Rev. Jeong Sang-shi, who chairs the PROK Peace and Reunification Committee, proclaimed the Word at the Peace Pilgrimage Prayer Meeting through his message titled “Don’t Construct a Tower of Babel.” “God is telling us again and again to stop the atrocious human acts that are destroying the Order of Creation,” Rev. Jeong said. “Nuclear power plants are anti-life and anti-peace Babel towers.” He warned, “The description of nuclear power plants as ‘safe’ and ‘economical’ is the sweet talk of Satan…We must heed God’s command not to build these Babel towers.”

The theme of the Anti-Nuclear Sunday United Worship a few days before was “A world of nuclear-free life together - Goodbye to old, unsafe nuclear power plants.” Rev. Park Cheol, former moderator of the Busan Council of Churches, declared, “To stand up and resist the destruction of life is an act of Christian faith…As Christians, who are entrusted with saving and protecting life, we must stand resolutely against those who kill and destroy life.” He appealed, “Let us not be bound by propriety, or compromise with reality, but according to the calling of our times, let us go forward together to let the children of the next generation enjoy a nuclear-free, beautiful land of rivers and mountains.”

In response to the decision of the Korea Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC) at the end of last month approving resumption of operation of the Weolseong No. 1 reactor, NCCK and PROK issued a joint criticism, demanding, “The NSSC must withdraw its decision to continue operating the reactor.”
