The Communion of Churches in Korea (CCIK; Rev. Yang Byeong-hui, executive director), in the petition for temporary disposition that it submitted to Seoul Central District Court on March 20, said, “We request suspension of use of the temple name Bongeunsa for the subway station on the Seoul Metro No. 9 subway line.” CCIK took the legal action because for more than a month, Seoul City has been refusing the Korean churches’ request to change the name. The CCIK petition presented seven reasons, including Mayor Park Won-soon’s violation of “standards for exclusion when establishing station names,” and religious favoritism. CCIK is the largest Christian ecumenical organ in Korea, with 38 denominations, 33,000 some churches and 6,900,000 church members. Its legal action is expected to further intensify the controversy over the name “Bongeunsa Station.”
