More than 700 citizens belonging to “Citizens’ Solidarity Against Mormon Building Construction” gathered in front of the Seo-gu District Office in Incheon on March 25. The object of the Citizens’ Solidarity protest is a large religious facility now being constructed by the Mormon religion in front of Shinmyeong Sky View Apartments on Seunghang-no in Seo-gu, Incheon. The facility is planned as a 4-story building with a 1-story basement, and total floor space of 5,887㎡ (about 1,780 pyeong). Participants in Citizens’ Solidarity include the regional Apartments Association, the Women’s Association and the Incheon Seo-gu Christian Association. The Mormon religion, which calls itself the “Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints” and insists it is the only true church, has been designated as heretical by the major denominations of the Korean church.

Im Jeong-suk, who co-chairs Citizens’ Solidarity, said, “The doctrines of all religions come from their founders, but the Mormons are cleverly hiding their true nature, establishing contacts with young people by tempting them with English education, and so on.”

Church circles in Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, were dismayed to discover recently that the World Mission Society Church of God (WMC, formerly Ahn Sahng-hong Witness Society) has acquired a church. Last September, WMC, hiding its true identity by using the name of one of its members, took over the old building of Gibbeum Church in Pohang, saying that it would operate a kindergarten. Pohang church circles, finally awakened to the situation, held a “Rally to Expel Heretical and Fake Religions from Pohang Region” on March 27, emphatically informing local residents about the dangers posed by this anti-society religious group. Local citizens also joined in the rally, holding placards that read, for example, “We strongly oppose the move of a heretical church into our peaceful market area.”
