KMC Chungdong & PCK Tonghap Saemoonan to Hold “Appenzeller and Underwood Symposium”

Methodist missionary Henry G. Appenzeller and Presbyterian missionary Horace Grant Underwood were sent abroad by different denominations, but they sailed on the same boat to Joseon (Korea) 130 years ago and lived here like brothers, helping the Korean church put down roots through their cooperative mission activities. The Korean Methodist Church’s Chungdong Jeil Church and the Presbyterian Church of Korea Tonghap’s Saemoonan Church, founded in parallel by the two missionaries in Chungdong, Seoul, are known as the “mother churches” of Korean Christianity.

Chungdong Jeil Church’s Rev. Song Gi-seong (right) and Saemoonan Church’s Lee Su-yeong held a news interview on the 21st at Chungdong Jeil Church in Jung-gu, Seoul, where they announced, “We will jointly convene an ‘International Symposium on Appenzeller and Underwood in Commemoration of 130 Years of Korean Mission,’ as a way to pass on these two missionaries’ spirit of unity.” Symposium participants will include Drew Theological Seminary and New Brunswick Theological Seminary in the U.S., from which Appenzeller and Underwood graduated.
