Handong Global University Sets Up Joshua Scholarship for Children of Pastors and Missionaries

2015-10-02 16:51
On September 30, Handong Global University (President: Jang Sun-heung) announced that it has set up a “Joshua Scholarship” to support its students who are children of pastors and missionaries. As of spring semester 2015, there are 524 students whose parents are pastors and 154 whose parents are missionaries. When those on leave of absence are added, a total 1,000 students are children of either pastors or missionaries, and they comprise 25% of the school’s 4,075 students.

A staffer of Handong University said, “40% of domestic churches are known to be not yet self-reliant, but church buildings are registered as the ministers’ property. So it is often difficult for a minister’s child to receive a government scholarship. Many missionaries give up their pensions to pay for their children’s education.”

The staffer added, “We plan to provide one-on-one meetings between each donor and eligible recipient to encourage their continuous relationship. We hope for more active participation by Korean church members in support of this scholarship.” (054-260-1063)
