The National Council of Churches in Korea has diagnosed the current overall national situation as critical, with democracy shaking at its roots and the division of the Korean peninsula continuously rigidifying, and therefore has determined to form a Christian election policy body to deal actively with the general elections this April.

During the two days of January 28~29, eighty some NCCK-related clergy and social mission organizations took part in a social mission policy conference (photo) at Suanbo Daelim Hotel in Chungju, Chungcheongbuk-do, where they listened to presentations and held discussions related to the four categories of reconciliation and reunification; justice, peace and human rights; life ethics; and migrants.

Gyeonggi Peace Education Center Representative Hwang In-seong, referring in his keynote lecture to the recent discourse in civil society circles on the “new-style coup d’etat,” declared that the most urgent task for religious circles and civil society organizations in this election is to protect democracy.

The proposal adopted and signed by all participants at the conclusion of the meeting clarified their active approach to the April general elections. It consists of 10 provisions including production and distribution of concrete guidelines to help voters select candidates according to Biblical values, and encouragement of concern and participation by the younger generation. NCCK has decided to hold its first follow-up meeting in pursuit of these goals on the 18th of this month, together with mission organizations.
