“During the Japanese occupation, Rev. Ju Gi-cheol resisted forced worship at Shinto shrines, even though he was subjected to torture; he kept his faith to the last, for our nation and our people. He is a symbol of Korean Christianity and the Korean people, and a representative martyr.”
Elder Lee Ji-hyeong (47, right) of Onnuri Community Church, spoke these words about the new movie “Ilsagago” (determination to die for something), directed by Gwon Hyeok-man. Lee, who played the main character in this film on the life of Rev. Ju Gi-cheol (1897∼1944), said that the production was possible solely through God’s grace.
In an interview with Kukmin Daily on March 14 at the Far East Broadcasting Company cafe, Elder Lee said, “Personally, I can absolutely never forget my part in this movie. I have resolved to follow the life of Rev. Ju, who is like a lamplight for the Korean church.”
Elder Lee’s father, actor Lee Dae-ro (77, left) also appears in the movie in the role of Rev. Lee’s teacher and mentor, Namgang Lee Seung-hun.
The movie opens on March 17.
