Reduction in Young People, Increase in Elderly Persons Age 60 or Over

2016-06-21 17:32

Statistics Korea has used information on religious affiliation obtained through its household census, taken every 10 years, along with the results of Gallup research in 2014, to analyze the age distribution among Protestant Christians. The findings show a substantial shrinking of the youth sector and a big expansion in the elderly category. In 1985, two thirds (64.2%) of the adult members of Protestant churches were young people in their 20s~30s. By 2014, however, this group had decreased to one third (33.5%). On the other hand, the group in their 60s or older more than doubled, from 9.2% in 1985 to 24.5% in 2014. When the results of last year’s census are announced this September, it will be interesting to find out how this age distribution among Protestants has changed in the meantime.
