105 citizens’ organizations including the Korean Church Countermeasures Committee on Homosexuality, the National Buddhist Council for the Security of Korea, and Catholics for Protection of the Nation held a press conference on June 22 in front of the Constitutional Court in Jongno-gu, Seoul, where they called emphatically for retention of the Military Penal Code’s article 92, clause 6, prohibiting homosexuality within the military (photo).
Hong Yeong-tae, who chairs the executive committee of Citizens United for Right Sex Culture, pointed out, “The Republic of Korea is a democratic country that solemnly guarantees freedom of religion and thought, but somehow if we criticize homosexuality, which is connected closely with AIDS, we are branded as gay haters and homophobes... Such branding is a form of reverse discrimination that violates the freedom of expression.”
