“Foreign bases should pull out only when peace is stabilized completely”

The Reconciliation and Reunification Committee (Chair: Rev. Noh Jung-sun) of the National Council of Churches in Korea held a press briefing (photo) on July 14 at the Korean Christian Building in Seoul, and announced specific plans for the international campaign to promote the NCCK proposal for a Korean Peninsula Peace Treaty, starting in the United States on August 18. The committee also clarified its stance on issues raised some by NCCK member denominations.

Committee Chair Noh said, “The current proposal for a peace treaty is not finalized but is open for modification through the collecting of diverse opinions. In relation to the pulling out of foreign bases, now we include, as in the August 8 Statement in the past, the conditional clause ‘to pull out when peace is stabilized completely.’ The notion of ‘zero nuclear’ in the peace treaty proposal means no nuclear weapons or nuclear power plants in the ocean, on the land, in the sky, or anywhere else in either South or North Korea.”

Noh and NCCK Secretary General Kim Young-ju will be part of the group of 23 persons who will travel to the U.S. on July 18 to meet with pastors of Korean churches and political leaders, explain their purpose, and request their collaboration toward realizing a peace treaty.
