It has been suggested that discriminatory attitudes in church culture, that is, the view of women as inferior beings in comparison to men, and as beings who tempt men, can kindle misogyny within the churches.

This was the message of a lecture by Prof. Kim Eun-Hye at a forum sponsored by the Christian Ethics Movement (Rev. Hong Jeong-gil, board chair), held on July 14 at Zoe Hall in the Korean Christian Building, Jongno-gu, Seoul. Prof. Kim, who teaches in the Christianity and Culture Department at Presbyterian University and Theological Seminary, was speaking to the theme of the forum: “Christianity’s Response to Misogyny: Shall We Overcome?”

In her presentation, titled “The Church Surmounting Misogyny,” Prof. Kim said, “Even now in this 21st century, many members of the clergy are reproducing misogyny through their incorrect understanding of the Bible and Christian tradition.” She noted, “The emphasis on women’s obedience and submission to men as a ‘key value’ is a typical example of the problem.”
