*Clergy and believers of Seongju-area churches pray before the start of the “Candlelight Gathering Against THAAD Deployment,” held on the evening of July 16 in front of Seongju County Office in North Gyeongsang Province.


Concern is growing in church circles over the deployment of the THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) system. Ever since Seongju County in North Gyeongsang Province was selected as the location for THAAD, an overwhelming majority of the area’s pastors and church members have been vigorously demanding that the plan be cancelled. There are some church members, however, who believe the plan is necessary for overall national security, even though the decision-making process was flawed.


*Banners opposing THAAD deployment hang outside a church in Seongju Village. They express the believers’ faith-based concern and their urgent desire to save their region.


*Members of Seongju’s largest congregation, the Seongju Jungang Church, sing a hymn during Sunday worship on the 17th of July. The church is located just 1 kilometer from Seongsan Antiaircraft Battery, where THAAD is to be positioned.


*The Seongju Council of Churches has hung a banner outside the Seongju Village Post Office, inscribed “We Oppose THAAD Deployment.”
