A Memorial Center Opens At Korea’s First Bible Introduction Site

2016-09-12 11:26

To commemorate the site where the Bible was first introduced to Korea, a memorial center (photo) has been opened, after the idea was planted 13 years ago.

On September 5, the First Bible to Korea Project (board chair: Rev. Kim Dae-gon of Seocheon Church) and Seocheon-gun (a county of Chungcheongnam-do) held the opening ceremony, which also celebrated the second centennial of the first introduction of the Bible to Korea, at Maryangpogu (port) with approximately 500 church-related persons and residents participating.

Maryang port is the site where British general Murray Maxwell stopped off on September 4-5, 1816, while researching the area for a nautical chart. In 2003, a document was discovered in which it was written that General Maxwell handed a Bible to Mr. Cho Dae-bok, a Maryang port military officer.
