“Wesley’s divine providence is an invitation to good theology”: MWRC Director Snyder

Is a car’s breakdown just an accident? Is a newborn’s death God’s will? Why has God allowed so much evil to happen in the world?

According to Howard Snyder, Director of Manchester Wesley Research Center (on right in photo), “These questions lead to inquiries about God’s divine providence…Divine providence is not an academic or theological question but a very practical and comprehensive thing.” He went on to interpret the divine providence doctrine of John Wesley (1703~1791). Director Snyder presented lectures on “Wesley’s Theology and Contemporary Society” at the 14th Cowman Memorial Lecture Series, held at Seoul Theological University in Bucheon, Gyeonggi-do, on October 4 and 7. Sponsored by OMS (One Mission Society) and Seoul Theological University, and managed by STU’s Institute for the Study of Modern Christianity, the Cowman Memorial Lectures are an academic event commemorating Charles Cowman, the founder of OMS, which in turn contributed to the establishment of the Holiness Church.

“Wesley presented both the core truth and the power of the Christian faith, in a very dynamic way,” Snyder said. “Wesley’s theology is very Biblical; it is a kind of invitation letter for the sustainable development of good churches, missions, culture, theology, and so on.” He added, “Wesley's theology is based on the revelation and authority of the Bible. Those who want to become genuine Christians need to perpetuate the spirit of Wesley’s devotion to the Bible and Jesus Christ.”
