Korean Church Opens New Era of Ecumenism

2017-01-11 13:28

The Korean Federation of Churches held its inauguration service on January 9 at Chungdong First Methodist Church in Jung-gu, Seoul, opening a new era of church unity beyond liberal-conservative divisions and theological and doctrinal differences. The historic Chungdong Church was founded in 1885 by Henry Appenzeller, one of the first missionaries to Korea. KFC’s first service was held here to announce the deep-rooted oneness of the Korean church.

KFC combines the Christian Council of Korea (CCK) and the Communion of Churches in Korea (CCIK), as well as the National Council of Churches in Korea. Core NCCK member denominations including the Presbyterian Church of Korea (PCK) Tonghap, the Korean Methodist Church, the Lutheran Church of Korea, and the Salvation Army Korea Territory, were among those who participated in the service in support of the efforts to unite the Korean church.

No executive director will be elected; rather, three persons will hold the post of co-representatives: Jeon Myeong-gu (Bishops' Council President, Korean Methodist Church), Kim Seong-gyu (PCK Hapdong), and Lee Seong-hui (PCK Tonghap). The temporary office of the KFC will be located in the PCK Daeshin General Assembly building.
