Oct. 29 Reformation Sunday… Campaign “Starting With My Small Act”

The “Starting With My Small Act Campaign” ("I'll be the first to..." Campaign) was announced at a press conference on September 8 at the Central Hall of the Salvation Army Korea Territory in Sogong-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul. The campaign sponsors requested that “all clergy motivate your church members to take an active part in this campaign, by preaching ‘Starting With Me sermons’ that encourage them to actualize their own ideas for reform.”

The Starting With Me Campaign, initiated early this year by Kukmin Daily, Christian Broadcasting System and 23 church denominations, is nearing its late stage surprisingly fast. It is spreading through the political, cultural and educational arenas, and society as a whole. The method of participation is simple. Just record on a sheet of A4-size paper what you are able to contribute to reforms in church and society, such as “I will be the first to serve,” or “I will be the first to be honest,” and promise to put this into practice.

Lutheran Church in Korea Moderator Kim Cheol-hwan (third from right), who co-chairs the Promotion Committee for the Starting With Me Campaign, explained, “The fundamental spirit of Luther’s Reformation was the attitude of reflecting on oneself as responsible, rather than blaming others… Reformation was actualized as each person went through change.” He predicted that “The Reformation 500th Anniversary Gathering at KINTEX in Ilsan on October 29 will become another takeoff point for the Starting With Me Campaign.”
