Kim Tae-heum (photo), Supreme Council member of the Liberty Korea Party, said, “We absolutely must revise the current National Human Rights Commission Act, which encourages and promotes homosexuality.”

“Looking at it from a religious standpoint, it goes against the basic principle of Creation, and from the social viewpoint it has an evil influence on community order,” Kim criticized in an interview with Kukmin Daily on January 22 at an office in the National Assembly Building. “We should not only approach the homosexual issue as a matter of gender minority rights, but treat it from a composite viewpoint that includes social customs, community order and health problems,” he said.

Last September, Supreme Council member Kim introduced a proposal to the National Assembly for amendment of the National Human Rights Commission Act. The current Act prohibits discrimination in employment, education, training and other areas on the basis of gender, religion, age, hometown, etc., but also on the basis of sexual orientation; Kim’s proposed amendment would remove the reference to sexual orientation. The proposal is now pending in the National Assembly Steering Committee. “The ruling party is opposed, so it won’t be easy, but I will do my best to get it passed,” Kim said.
