NCCK-Orthodox-Catholic Announce Korean Church Commission on Faith and Order

2014-05-20 17:37

On May 18 the National Council of Churches in Korea, the Korean Orthodox Church, and the Catholic Church in Korea announced the founding of the Korean Church Commission on Faith and Order (KCFO), to be launched this May 22, for the purpose of promoting and activating participation in the Christian ecumenical movement.

KCFO’s structure and operations will be organized on the model of the World Council of Churches’ Commission on Faith and Order. The mission tasks of the WCC Faith and Order Commission are developed through consultations among the Protestant, Orthodox, and Catholic churches.

To promote ecumenism among Korean Christians and fellowship among these churches, KCFO plans programs such as Getting Closer, Studying Together, Acting Together, and Praying Together. The inauguration will take place at 11 a.m. on May 22, at the Seoul Cathedral of the Anglican Church of Korea, located on Sejongdaero in Junggu, Seoul.

Since the past, the three organizations have been carrying out ecumenical movement based on Jesus’ prayer, “Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one” (John 17:11). Member denominations of NCCK have been in dialogue with the Catholic Church since 1986, when they began ecumenical prayer meetings. In 2001 they organized the “Korean Christian Ecumenical Movement,” and have been holding prayer meetings and forums, theological dialogue, and seminarian exchanges every year. At a discussion meeting in December 2012, the representatives of these three organizations decided to transform the Korean Christian Ecumenical Movement into KCFO to reinforce ecumenical movement and solidarity.
