Korean Church Commission on Faith and Order to Open “Unity Academy” in 2015

2014-08-04 15:47
This past May, the new Korean Church Commission on Faith and Order (KCFO) was established, and now its theological committee has decided to open a Korean Christian Unity Academy (tentative name) in January next year.

The KCFO theology committee, composed of 20 some theologians from the Catholic and Protestant churches, met at the Christian Building in Jongno-gu, Seoul, on July 31, and announced, “Timed with next year’s Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, January 18~25, we will set up the Korean Christian Unity Academy, with the aim of popularizing the movement for ecumenical unity through lectures for believers and other persons.” The National Council of Churches in Korea (NCCK), in charge of the meeting, explained that the Academy will provide a variety of lectures promoting Protestant-Catholic unity and reconciliation. Its 12-week course of 12 lectures will offer both basic and in-depth classes.

“This Academy is seeking a popular approach to restore relations of brotherhood and sisterhood between the Catholic and Protestant churches,” an NCCK source said. “Ultimately, while strengthening our role as light and salt, we will actualize the key Christian themes of justice and love in Korean society.”

Earlier, at its inaugural assembly on May 22, KCFO decided to carry out an expanded, full-scale ecumenical movement that will include theological dialogue between Protestants and Catholics.
